Beautiful and Broken by Julia Maddalina, inspired by Patrick Rothfuss's novella The Slow Regard of Silent Things.

This oil painting was a passion project spurred on by the Worldbuilders Fundraiser Event at the end of 2018. I am in love with the character of Auri, from Patrick Rothfuss’ The Slow Regard of Silent Things, and I had been wanting to do a solo painting of her for some time. At the time I had challenged myself to paint something in the style of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, a painting hero of mine. As I watched Pat stream on Twitch for the Charity, I couldn’t think of a better time to begin this painting idea that meant so much to me. 

As I read and sketched, I realized that rather than paint a specific moment, I wanted to try and capture Auri’s general wonder towards Fulcrum; the true shape of him, the secrets he held, and where he belonged.
